Save the date! "the Social" presented by More Art, kicks off on Saturday, September 19th and you're invited! Join an evening of participatory art, music, and (of course) drinks! Mix and mingle with fellow artists, bring a guest, and get social! Don't forget — all ticket sales go to support the Engaging Artists Residency Program for emerging artists!
ENGAGING ARTISTS, preparing to enter its third year, encourages emerging artists to deepen their understanding of socially-engaged art practice through direct action involving volunteer opportunities and interactive weekly workshops. This year the program was exclusively open to foreign born and first generation American artists who went on to work with and create art projects with immigrant senior citizen populations at local social service centers, nursing homes and nonprofits across all five boroughs. Learn more about the program here!
2014 Engaging Artist Julia Rooney will lead a food-based social performance where guests will share a meal and recipes which then become part of an evolving installation in the space and beyond. The project emerged from her work with a group of women in a Brooklyn homeless shelter. (RSVP to participate: info@moreart.org)
2015 Engaging Artist Annie Kurz will display photo-based work inspired by her volunteer experience wih immigrant seniors in Forest Hill, Queens. The photographs deal with problems and hopes that surround getting older. Each panel suggests a "remedy" for physical illness, psychological needs, or simply hope.
More Art is a nonprofit organization that fosters collaborations between artists and communities to create thought-provoking public art and educational programs that inspire broad discourse regarding social and cultural issues. Since its inception in 2004, More Art has produced a wide range of projects reflecting the concerns and challenges of various New York City communities including topics such as gentrification, immigration, and war trauma. Our work started in Chelsea but has expanded to include projects in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Discover more: moreart.org
In 2014, More Art collaborated with Artist Volunteer Center (AV Center) to create the Engaging Artist Residency Program. AV Center promotes humanitarian volunteerism by artists, and supports the creation of artwork inspired by volunteer action. The AV Center connects arts and volunteer programs with the purpose of uniting organizations and individuals for the common goal of helping artists help people.
